Gleaning is the harvesting of leftover crops that would otherwise go unused.  Projects such as Fruits of the City and the Garden Gleaning Project glean local produce for/with local food shelves.

I am hoping this group can be an outlet for conversations about gleaning opportunities and that growers could post on here if they have an abundance of produce they would like to share with their neighbors.

I am tuning in from Morris Healthy Eating to start thinking and learning about gleaning.  Hi everyone!

Hi all.  Great idea for a board Jared.

The U of M Central Regional Partnership will be overseeing a VISTA who, as part of her year-long responsibilities, will be designing and implementing a gleaning program in Central MN (think Brainerd area).  This is an exciting opportunity.  I've invited one of the catalyst/farmers working on the project to join this group and I hope she does.

Kathy, that is really great!  keep us posted on that position and the work you're doing there.

Have you looked into some of the large scale gleaning work that Second Harvest Heartland are doing in great Minnesota?  They've really amped up their gleaning this year.

Love to see conversations happening and connections being made by people in various parts of the state who are interested in this issue!  Jared you are doing such great work in Hennepin County!

Hi everyone. Garden Gleaning Project has A LOT of seedlings available for any gardens interested in donating a portion of the harvest to our partner food shelves.  These are terrific heirloom veggies and herbs.

Please email me at gardengleaning@gmail.com if you or anyone you know has space and can care for these plants.

Hi Everyone:

Per Kathy's post above, yes, we will be working to create a gleaner's club in the Brainerd Lakes area, working with many farmers and the local food shelf.  We are very excited to have the VISTA and I am looking forward to sharing our progress as we proceed.  Gleaning is also a featured topic for the Food Summit in Duluth August 21-23 and we plan on attending.

Arlene-- so glad to see you in the group!  You bring a lot of first hand knowledge and experience to the gleaning table.  The food shelf where I live is county based-- same the Brainerd area?  In Greater MN should we be thinking of organizing gleaning by county?

Comment by Arlene Jones on June 28, 2012 at 6:40am

The food shelf in Brainerd is organized, housed and staffed by the Salvation Army and is not county based.  There are other food shelfs in the lakes area as well.  Interesting thought and one we'd have to sort out.

Any gardeners in South Minneapolis?  Hennepin county? I'm looking to connect with more gardeners in the community interested in supporting a local food shelf with fresh garden produce. No Donation is too small!

call me at 651-789-3321 or email jwalhowe@mnproject.org
