Urban Agriculture Culture Fight in Detroit

There are many ways to define and describe urban agriculture--from tomato plants in pots on a back step to almost industrial sized operations connected to supermarkets.  Approaches to urban agriculture differ as well. It can be a smart business deal or a grassroots way of empowering disadvantaged communities. In Detroit, these two visions of urban agriculture are going head to head as the city considers Hantz Woodlands project. Milwaukee Goes Next Step in Bloomberg Competition... around Urban Foods

See link below for Milwaukee's move into a smaller group for a $5 million dollar grant ... theirs in built around urban food developments... the lesson here seems to me is this: timely topics for grants are important; city leadership is key; and broad based demonstration of drawing on the social capital of people and organizations that have demonstrated their commitment, passion & expertise is the currency.  Growing Power has created a great 'brand name' while also demonstrating amazing…See More

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 11:47am 0 Comments

Among the many optimistic developments associated with our evolving food systems over the past few years, the explosion in interest in and action around urban ag is certainly one of them.
