Community Gardens Celebrate Community Garden Day in Minnesota

On August 11, 2012 community gardens across the State of Minnesota will celebrate Community Garden Day, a statewide community garden open house . On this day, over 55 participating community gardens will host events in their garden that are free and open to the public.

The cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis will  pass resolutions recognizing  the contributions of community gardens and gardeners to the community and  their cities. August 11th 2012 will be officially declared “Community Garden Day.”

The resolutions will be presented at the regularly scheduled city council meetings the week immediately preceding Community Garden Day. Other cities and local governments are encouraged to pass similar resolutions in support of the day.

The purpose of Community Garden Day is to provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about these community spaces directly from the people who steward them and the events will be as unique as the gardens in which they are located.

Event times and activities vary from garden to garden, and include art projects, kids’ activities, garden tours, potlucks, musical acts, presentations on horticultural topics, and more.  For a complete listing of participating gardens, event times and activities view the Directory of Participating Gardens available at www.gardeningmatters.org

Community Garden Day is organized by Gardening Matters, a Twin Cities-based nonprofit that grows successful & sustainable community gardens in MN by supporting the gardeners that make them happen. This day recognizes the residents who work together to improve their communities through gardening.
