Food. Health. Community.
Every summer, it seems we face at least one big blowup (and lots of small ones) at farms in the metro areas where Hmong American farmers are trying to earn a living raising the healthy produce that fills our farmers' markets. Two years ago, it was the neighbor who threatened some of the farmers with a loaded shotgun. This year, the livelihoods of more than 30 Hmong farm families are being threatened by a new zoning ordinance in May Township: http://www.startribune.com/local/east/163773516.html
As anyone who has tried to raise food in the urban or periurban areas knows, zoning is where the rubber hits the road, and it's often the primary obstacle to building the infrastructure of a local food system. We still have a lot of educating and advocating to do.
